DURHAM, N.C. – Four members of the Duke women’s lacrosse program have been named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I Academic Honor Roll for the 2013 season, as announced by the organization this week.

2013 graduates Makenzie Hommel and Mie Graham, as well as rising seniors Tara Stokes and Taylor Virden, were among the 190 student-athletes from 68 different institutions selected to this year’s honor roll. All student-athletes were nominated by their schools and have achieved at least junior status academically. Fifty-one of the 190 student-athletes recognized by the IWLCA were members of teams that advanced to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, including Duke’s four representatives. In addition, the Blue Devils led all Atlantic Coast Conference schools in 2013 with four selections to the list.

Graham, a four-year member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, was named to the IWLCA Honor Roll for the second consecutive year after graduating in May with a degree in political science and a certificate in Markets and Management Studies. The defender from Princeton, N.J., started all 20 contests for the Blue Devils this spring and totaled 31 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers for her career. Graham was an integral part of a defensive unit that held 11 opponents to single-digit scoring in 2013 and notched just the second shutout in program history Feb. 10 in a 23-0 win over Presbyterian.

Hommel also earned her second IWLCA Honor Roll selection to go along with her fourth ACC Academic Honor Roll and second All-ACC Academic team accolades, graduating in May with a degree in sociology and a minor in theater studies. She garnered All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament team honors during the 2013 campaign while leading the squad in goals (44) and hat tricks (9) and ranking fourth in the ACC in goals per game (2.75). A product of Setauket, N.Y., Hommel concluded her career at Duke among the top-20 players all-time in career points (116) and goals (92) after surpassing the 100-point mark against Boston College Apr. 6.

Stokes, a defender from Gladwyne, Pa., is majoring in public policy and pursuing a minor in economics at Duke. She appeared in 12 games last season while making starts against Navy and Maryland in the NCAA Tournament. Stokes has tallied one assist, 13 ground balls, two draw controls and seven caused turnovers heading into her senior year, and has also been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll each of the past three seasons.

Virden was one of two Blue Devils to receive IWLCA All-America recognition in 2013, and also collected IWLCA All-South Region and All-ACC honors as well as her third selection to the All-ACC Academic team and the ACC Academic Honor Roll. The defender from Ellicott City, Md., is majoring in visual and media studies and is pursuing certificates in Markets and Management Studies and Arts of the Moving Image. She paced the Blue Devils with 54 draw controls this spring while ranking fifth in the ACC at 2.84 draw controls per game, and is currently tied for sixth on Duke’s all-time charts with 122 draw controls for her career. Virden also owns 81 ground balls and 51 caused turnovers heading into her senior campaign.
