CARY, N.C. – The 2013-14 Duke women’s tennis team kicked off its season on Friday by hosting the Duke Fab Four Invitational at the Cary Tennis Center, in Cary, N.C.  

In singles action, Duke senior Hanna Mar knocked off Ansley Speaks of Furman, 6-0, 6-3, while freshman Alyssa Smith dropped a 6-7 (1), 7-6, 6-3 decision to Oklahoma State’s Karyn Guttormsen in the blue bracket.  Mar, who is out of Burr Ridge, Ill., will next face Erin Routliffe of Alabama in the quarterfinals on Saturday.  Smith will next go up against Ines Deheza of Texas A&M in the consolation side of the bracket.  

Blue Devil senior Marianne Jodoin got things started on the right track for Duke in the black bracket with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Furman’s Alex Moreno-Kaste.  The Varennes, Quebec product will next face Erin Stephens of Ole Miss in the next round.  

Ester Goldfeld, who is from Brooklyn, N.Y., opened her season with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Danielle Spielmann of Alabama and will take on Oklahoma State’s Kanyapat Narattana on Saturday in the quarterfinals.  

In doubles action, the Duke tandem of Goldfeld/Jodoin handily defeated the Ole Miss pair of Erin Stephens and Iris Verboven, 8-2, to advance to the second round in the black draw. In the semifinals, Goldfeld and Jodoin faced UNC’s Caroline Price and Whitney Kay. The Blue Devils battled to an 8-4 victory over the UNC pair and sealed the duo’s ticket for a spot in Saturday’s doubles final, where they will face Florida’s Belinda Woolcock and Sofie Oyen.

In the white draw, the duo of Mar and Smith dropped the first match of the season, 8-6, to Alabama’s Emily Zabor and Carmen Blanco. Mar and Smith fell to UNC’s Kate Vialle and Laura Slater in the consolation semifinals, 8-4. The Duke pair will face Oklahoma State’s Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari on Saturday, in the third place match of the consolation round.   

The action picks up on Saturday with the final round of doubles starting at 9 a.m. and the second round of singles set to start at 11:00 a.m., followed by the third round of singles at 2:30 p.m. The finals for singles will be Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.
