DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, sat down with senior Jessie Rubin  to learn more about the Rockville, Md., native. Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke.
Jessie Rubin: The sense of community we have among all the athletes. Being a part of something greater than ourselves – it really made the transition to Duke and my experience at Duke so much wholesome. And being a student-athlete is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be among people that share hopes and dreams. What is your favorite competition-related memory?
JR: Our ACC outdoor meet. On a personal level, I qualified for my first championship round. It was really exciting to be there with my team and with other people who were really fast, and to get the chance to run with them. What is your favorite memory away from competition?
JR: We just have a really strong bond with each other. We have a lot of team dinners and team outings that I feel like not every single running team in the country has. I can’t name a specific moment, but we have some fun festivities every year. What are some things you want to accomplish in the next 10 years?
JR: In 10 years, I want to feel fulfilled, like I’m heading in the right direction and using my creativity and talents in a valuable and most efficient way. Something that’s tapping into all of my best qualities and working with people who all bring out the best qualities in each other to create something great. I don’t know what it will be but that’s the general idea. Name three places you would travel to if you could.
JR: There are so many places in the U.S. I haven’t been to, like in the West. Yosemite, Yellowstone, California – just all these cool places that I’ve never been. Internationally, I would really like to go back to Switzerland because I’m actually part Swiss and I went when I was younger. I just remember it being absolutely amazing. And I’d also like to see New Zealand and Australia. Name three of your favorite restaurants in Durham.
JR: I like Watts Grocery and Foster’s and The Refectory. Durham has such an eclectic variety. It’s awesome to try all these different places. Describe Coach Kevin Jermyn in three words.
JR: Direct, wise and level-headed.
