DURHAM, N.C. – After guiding the Duke volleyball team to victories over Indiana and No. 16 Illinois this past weekend, sophomore Elizabeth Campbell earned ACC co-Player of the Week honors, while Sasha Karelov garnered ACC Freshman of the Week accolades as announced by the league office Monday. North Carolina middle blocker Victoria McPherson joined Campbell as ACC co-Player of the Week.
Campbell, a sophomore rightside hitter from Parker, Colo., averaged 5.14 kills per set, totaling a team-high 36 kills over the weekend while also leading the Blue Devils with a .338 hitting percentage. She hit a match-high .478 versus Indiana, knocking down 13 kills while also contributing seven digs, three blocks and a service ace. Campbell followed that performance with a 23-kill effort against the 16th-ranked Illini, helping Duke to its first win over a ranked opponent since 2011. She registered three blocks and added 11 digs against Illinois to pick up her first double-double of the season.
Karelov, a freshman defensive specialist from Raleigh, N.C., was a key component in Duke’s two victories over Big Ten opponents. For the weekend, she trailed only libero Ali McCurdy in digs, averaging 4.43 per set, and helped the Blue Devils limit the two teams to a combined .138 hitting percentage. She posted nine digs in Duke’s sweep of Indiana Friday evening, then totaled a career-best 22 in the Blue Devils’ victory over the 16th-ranked Illini. On serve receive, she committed just one error in 34 chances over the two matches.
Duke begins ACC play Friday, Sept. 27, taking on Virginia at 6:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
