DURHAM, N.C. – Duke’s cross country and track & field programs will welcome six volunteer assistants to the staff for the 2013-2014 season. The individuals bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Blue Devil programs.

Lauren Alpert:

Alpert joins the Duke coaching staff following a stellar career as a student-athlete at Illinois Wesleyan University.  While attending Illinois Wesleyan, Alpert earned NCAA Division III All-America honors an astounding 17 times. The Park Ridge, Ill., native received All-America honors in the long jump, 400-meter dash, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Alpert also owns the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin record in three events, including the indoor long jump, the indoor 4x400m relay and the outdoor long jump.

Alpert also excelled academically, receiving USTFCCCA Academic All-America honors four times, while also being named to the CoSIDA first team Academic All-America list and the CoSIDA first team Academic All-District squad.

While competing for Illinois Wesleyan from 2010-12, Alpert acted as executive assistant for her team’s head track & field coach Chris Schumacher.

Will Feldman:

Feldman became a member of Duke’s cross country and track & field coaching staff after a four-year stint with Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass., and an additional two years coaching at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. While at Emmanuel College, Feldman was integral in the development of the college’s cross country program, including acting as the recruiting director over a four-year span. Following his time with Emmanuel College, Feldman worked with MIT’s middle distance and distance student-athletes, utilizing performance software such as Dartfish to analyze the gait of MIT’s runners and maximize runner efficiency. In 2010, Feldman earned a USATF Level II coaching certification.

Matt LoPiccolo:

LoPiccolo brings 13 years of coaching experience to the Duke staff. LoPiccolo joins the Blue Devils after a 13 year career as the head coach of SUNY Oneonta University’s track & field program. During his tenure, LoPiccolo received a variety of coaching honors, including the 2013 NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Men’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year award and the 2013 State University New York Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year honor, among others.

While LoPiccolo coached at Oneonta, the women’s indoor track & field program improved from a 25th-place finish at the Eastern College Athletics Conference meet in 2003 to ECAC champions the following year. Three years later, the women’s program would finish third at the NCAA Division III Championship meet. In 2013, LoPiccolo guided his men’s track & field team to an NCAA Division III sixth-place finish, the highest in school history. The men’s program won the State University of New York Athletic Conference Indoor Championship meet the same year.

Sean-Patrick Oswald:

Oswald, a 2011 graduate of Duke University, returns to his alma mater to assist the track & field and cross country coaching staff for the 2013-14 season. The former Blue Devil saw much success in his track & field career. Oswald currently holds the school record in the indoor 800-meters and is a member of the school record holding indoor distance medley relay team. Oswald’s success on the track earned him a number of honors, including being named to the All-East team twice and earning All-ACC honors. Oswald also made the ACC Academic Honor Roll three times.

In addition to the track & field and academic accolades Oswald infuses into the coaching staff, the Duke alum also brings two years of coaching experience to the program. While working as a scientist for Merck & Co., Oswald also acted as an assistant coach for the North Penn High School track & field program from 2011-13.

Ashley Staples:

Staples returns to the Duke track & field staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2012-13 season. While Staples assisted with the sprints and hurdle events last season, a total of five school records were broken, including the women’s indoor 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash, as well as the outdoor men’s 200 and 400-meter dash and the women’s outdoor 4x100-meter relay.

The North Carolina graduate owns a USATF Level I coaching certification. Prior to joining Duke, Staples competed for the Tar Heels in the 400 meter hurdles, earning all-conference honors after finishing in the top eight at the 2004 ACC Championships.

Scott Tanis:

After graduating from Lewis University in 2013, Tanis begins his collegiate coaching career with Duke’s cross country and track & field programs. The Yorkville, Ill., native provides a great deal of experience competing at the Division II collegiate level. As a member of the Flyers, Tanis excelled in the middle distance events, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet in the 1,500-meter run and earning USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the process.

Tanis owns a number of coaching certifications, including a USATF Level I coaching certification and an American Sports Education Program coaching certification. An Academic All-America second team nominee, Tanis also minored in coaching.
