Brown, who was also named Walter Camp Foundation National Player of the Week Sunday, received the ACC Linebacker of the Week award after logging 14 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and a key fourth-quarter interception that preserved Duke’s sixth win of the season. Martin was named ACC Specialist of the Week after hitting field goals of 51 and 53 yards to become the first kicker in the nation this season to hit multiple field goals of 50 or more yards in a single game.
Behind their efforts, Duke improved to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the ACC to qualify for a bowl for the second consecutive season. The win was Duke’s fourth in a row and improved the Blue Devils’ road record to 3-0 this season.
Brown and fellow linebacker David Helton spearheaded a Duke defense that held Virginia Tech to a season-low matching 10 points and shut out the Hokies in the first half. Brown’s interception came with Duke holding on to a 13-10 lead with 4:22 remaining in the game and allowed the Blue Devils to run out the clock and preserve the victory. His interception was one of four for the Duke defense, which is holding its last three opponents to just 13.0 points per game. On the season, Brown is averaging 8.7 tackles per game – the fourth highest average in the ACC – while totaling 5.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery.
Martin’s two long field goals against Virginia Tech extended his streak of five consecutive made field goals and moved him into a tie for second place on Duke’s career list with four made field goals of 50-plus yards. His first make against the Hokies, a 51-yarder, put Duke on top 3-0, while his second, a career-long 53-yarder, came as time expired in the first half to give Duke a 6-0 halftime lead. He would later add an extra point on quarterback Anthony Boone’s third-quarter touchdown run to put Duke ahead 13-0.
Duke has received eight ACC Player of the Week citations this season and at least one of the league’s weekly awards in three of the past four game weeks. Duke will return to the field to host N.C. State on Nov. 9 in Wallace Wade Stadium following a bye week. Tickets are available at www.GoDuke.com/tickets or by calling (919) 681-BLUE.
