DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Kaitlyn Kerr to learn more about the Bensalem, Pa., native.
GoDuke.com: Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke.
Kaitlyn Kerr: Being a part of the Duke women’s soccer team. The coaching staff that we have is incredible and they recruit the best people first, and then the best athletes. I think that’s what’s been able to build the program. Meeting people from all over the world and being able to connect with a lot of different countries you’d never be able to meet at another school. Ultimately, what I came here for was the academic and athletic excellence. We play in the best soccer league in the country for women and we’re challenged every day in the academic world.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite ‘on the field’ memory?
KK: I love to win, so when we won the Wake Forest game to make it to the national championship, I think that year was really just a team effort. That whole game was awesome. Being in the national championship is something I’ll never forget.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite ‘off the field’ memory?
KK: Away trips with the team. I think that’s been awesome. I always say, ‘I don’t even know what airport I’m in or what state I’m in,’ but you’re with the team. You’re having a good time and you’re seeing parts of the country you would never be able to. It’s really about spending time with the coaches and the other players.
GoDuke.com: Name three foods that you couldn’t live without.
KK: Pizza, ice cream and some kind of chicken or meat.
GoDuke.com: Name your three favorite restaurants in Durham.
KK: Definitely Alivia’s, because I work there as a hostess, Bull City Burger and Piazza Italia.
GoDuke.com: Describe yourself in three words.
KK: Passionate, competitor and hardworking.
GoDuke.com: Name three people you model your game after.
KK: Growing up it was always Mia Hamm. Although she was always the scorer, I never wanted to be the scorer, I always wanted to try to make the plays happen. I wouldn’t necessarily model my game off her game specifically, but she was good at one thing and she excelled in that area, so I would say I try to do that with creating opportunities. Another person that I love to watch is Messi. I think he connects with everyone on the field and that’s what I try to do. More recently, I’d try to be like Tobin Heath. She’s very technical and very skilled, and I think she makes pretty good decisions on the field.
