DURHAM, N.C. – Eighth-ranked Duke (13-5, 3-3 ACC) will face fourth-ranked Virginia for the second time this season Thursday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship in Newton, Mass. The Blue Devils earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament while the Cavaliers received the No. 5 seed. The winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between Duke and Virginia advances to play top-seeded Maryland (18-1, 6-0 ACC) in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.

ACC Championship to be Broadcast on ESPN3
Thursday morning’s quarterfinal match between No. 4 seed Duke and No. 5 seed Virginia will be broadcast live on ESPN3 (http://es.pn/ACC-FHK-UVAvsDUKE) … The game will also be available on the WatchESPN mobile app.

Virginia Series History
Thursday’s ACC quarterfinal contest marks the 48th all-time meeting between Duke and Virginia with the Cavaliers holding a 31-16 advantage in the series ... The two ACC squads met earlier this season with Virginia claiming a 4-3 victory in Charlottesville Oct. 18 ... The Blue Devils are 4-7 in program history when facing Virginia in the ACC Tournament.

Last Time We Met
Down 4-1 at intermission, Duke responded with a rallying effort but came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Cavaliers Oct. 18 in Charlottesville ... Sophomore Aileen Johnson, redshirt senior Devon Gagliardi and senior Emmie Le Marchand all scored for the Blue Devils in the loss ... Virginia’s Elly Buckley had a hat trick with three tallies to pace the Cavalier offense ... For the game, Virginia outshot the Blue Devils, 18-6, and held a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners ... Duke goalkeeper Lauren Blazing totaled seven saves in the loss.

Scouting the Cavaliers
Fourth-ranked and fifth-seeded Virginia (15-4) concluded regular season action Oct. 25 in a 4-1 loss to No. 1 Maryland to finish 3-3 in conference play ... Senior forward Elly Buckley leads the ACC in points per game (2.47), goals per game (1.05) and defensive saves per game (0.26) entering the tournament ... She also comes in at fourth nationally in points per game and seventh in goals per game ... Buckley had a hat trick against Duke during the regular season meeting Oct. 18 ... Jenny Johnstone is third among ACC goalkeepers with 79 saves in 19 contests and has posted a league-leading six shutouts.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Eighth-ranked and fourth-seeded Duke (13-5, 3-3 ACC) finished its ACC slate with a 5-1 loss to top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland Nov. 2 in Durham ... Senior Emmie Le Marchand paces the squad in points (30) and goals (11) and is tied for first, along with junior midfielder Abby Beltrani in assists (8) ... A senior from Worcester, England, Le Marchand ranks eighth in the conference in points per game (1.67) and is tied for seventh in goals per game (0.61) entering the ACC Championship ... Senior Paula Heimbach, a preseason All-ACC selection, has anchored the Blue Devils’ back line to four shutouts this fall ... In goal, redshirt sophomore Lauren Blazing has had a breakout season, totaling 99 saves in 18 outings ... A product of Durham, N.C., she ranks seventh nationally in save percentage with a .786 clip ... Blazing posted a career-best 22 saves in a 3-2 overtime shootout victory over previously unbeaten and top-ranked North Carolina Sept. 27 to earn ACC Player of the Week recognition.

Senior Emmie Le Marchand tallied the Blue Devils’ lone goal in a 5-1 loss to No. 1 Maryland Nov. 2 at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium ... Le Marchand scored on a penalty stroke in the 65th minute, making her 2-for-2 on penalty strokes this fall ... The Terrapins’ Anna Dessoye registered two goals while Ali McEvoy had three assists ... Despite the score, Maryland held just a one-shot advantage at the end of the match ... The Blue Devils led in penalty corners, 8-7.

Familiar Foes
Duke and Virginia have faced nine of the same opponents this season ... Both squads collected wins over Boston College, Old Dominion, Radford and Wake Forest ... The Blue Devils went 6-3 against the teams’ mutual opponents while Virginia compiled a 5-4 ledger ... The Cavaliers went 3-3 in ACC regular season play to place fifth in the ACC standings ... Duke finished fourth in the regular season conference standings with a 3-3 mark.

Duke in the ACC Championship
The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 15-30 in the conference tournament while making three trips to the title match (1990, 2003, 2011) ... Duke is 12-11 all-time in quarterfinal contests ... The 2011 ACC Championship saw the squad advance to the final with a 3-2 victory over the Cavaliers in the first round and a 2-1 win against Maryland in the semifinals ... The Blue Devils fell 2-1 to North Carolina in the title match.

Four Blue Devils Garner All-ACC Honors
Redshirt sophomore Lauren Blazing, senior Paula Heimbach, sophomore Aileen Johnson and senior Emmie Le Marchand were all named to the 2013 All-ACC second team Wednesday, Nov. 6 by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches ... Le Marchand received the accolade for the third time in her career while Heimbach was recognized for the second consecutive season … Blazing and Johnson both received the honor for the first time in their respective careers … Top-ranked Maryland led the way with six selections to the All-ACC squads while Duke and Syracuse had four each.

Blazing Among Nation’s Top Goalkeepers
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper and Durham, N.C., product Lauren Blazing ranks second in the ACC and is seventh among all Division I goalkeepers in save percentage with an .786 clip through 18 games … She has compiled a 1.42 goals against average in addition to guiding the defense to four shutouts … The Durham, N.C., native was named the ACC Player of the Week and the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week following a career-high 22-save performance in a 3-2 shootout win over previously top-ranked and unbeaten North Carolina Sept. 27.

Balanced Scoring by Blue Devil Offense
Fourteen different Duke players have tallied a point through 18 games this fall … Twelve different Blue Devils have registered a goal, led by senior Emmie Le Marchand with 11 … Le Marchand paces the squad and ranks eighth in the ACC with 30 points … Junior midfielder Abby Beltrani has totaled a career-best eight assists to tie for ninth in the ACC in assists per game along with Le Marchand … Five different players scored in Duke’s 6-0 win over Radford Sept. 22.

Heimbach Anchors Back Line
Senior defender Paula Heimbach continues to be one of the Blue Devils’ most dependable backs in 2013 … An All-ACC honoree and Longstreth/NFHCA third team All-America selection last fall, Heimbach once again garnered all-conference recognition this year … She tallied the Blue Devils’ first defensive save of the year against Syracuse Oct. 11 … Heimbach and the Duke defense own four shutouts on the year and currently allow just 1.42 goals per game.

Le Marchand Moving Up Career Charts
After topping the 100-point mark for her career earlier this season, senior forward Emmie Le Marchand continues to etch her name into the program record books … With 121 points for her career, the Worcester, England product currently sits eighth overall in school history … Le Marchand also ranks eighth all-time in career goals (49) and 17th in career assists (23).
