DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head coach David Cutcliffe announced Tuesday that senior running back/linebacker Juwan Thompson has been added to the team’s quartet of captains for the 2013 season.

“Juwan is the epitome of what we want Duke Football to be,” Cutcliffe said.  “He is most deserving of this recognition, and the other four captains were in complete agreement.”

A native of Fairburn, Ga., Thompson has played in 44 career games at Duke with 23 starting assignments at running back.  He has compiled 1,798 career all-purpose yards with 250 rushing attempts for 1,093 yards, 54 pass receptions for 378 yards and 15 kickoff returns for 327 yards.  Thompson has scored 12 career touchdowns.

Prior to Duke’s game against Virginia Tech earlier this season, Thompson began practicing at linebacker to offer depth to the injury-ridden group. Against the Hokies, he registered three tackles as Duke upended then 16th-ranked Virginia Tech, 13-10.  Thompson also has been a mainstay on Duke’s special teams units thoughout his career.

“Juwan ranks up there with the most unselfish players I’ve ever coached,” noted Cutcliffe.  “His switching positions in the middle of his senior season says so much about his character and commitment to the success of our team.”

Thompson joins Anthony Boone, Ross Cockrell, Justin Foxx and Dave Harding as Duke’s captains this year.
