It has been a seven-year dry spell for Duke field hockey in the final four but the team of 2013 has finally made it!

The field hockey team was sore and stiff dragging our bodies around campus Monday but this is a feeling we have been waiting for since last Sunday’s selection show. The nerves and excitement that circulated in our team room that evening were electric and a week later we know the answer to every question and discussion that had buzzed amongst everyone since the end of the ACC tournament.

In the team room that night we had faith that whatever the outcome, we would come through it because the dedication and enjoyment amongst our field hockey family is relentless; every hurdle we overcome represents another week during which we get to do what we love. When our name came up with a star next to it representing the hosting site, we celebrated another chance to play in front of a home crowd and to give back to all the staff members who have worked so hard for our team this season. After the disappointment of our senior game, this was a much better way to say good bye to Jack Katz Stadium. I’m obviously biased, but there could not be a more beautiful field, climate and setting for such a tournament. This is a final four-worthy field and stadium.

The weekend brought beautiful weather and Duke took to the field wearing blue-collared party dresses. A 10-goal weekend doesn’t suggest the tough physical grind that both matches were, but those goals were rewards for the team determination and attack and the belief that had been building all week. Thursday night will see us get dressed up for real at the final four celebration banquet but we will be back in our overalls on Friday for our semifinal against Maryland at 2 p.m.

To anyone who thinks just getting to the final four is achievement enough, think again. DUFH is going to fight for another two wins at the dance.
