DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with redshirt senior Devon Gagliardi to learn more about the Wilkes-Barre, Pa.,native.
GoDuke.com: What are three of your favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke?
Devon Gagliardi: I think the first thing is the opportunities it’s afforded me, just the skills I’ve learned from being a student-athlete, and that translates into everything I do. The second thing, I’d say, is just the school pride, and being a part of that community. It truly is a family and there’s so much support. The third thing is the resources. If you want something, it’s there.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite on the field memory?
DG: Definitely [the win over] UNC. I feel like it was a long time coming, and it meant so much to the senior class. And not just to the senior class, but to alumni that have graduated, and for those in the coming years. It was huge for our program.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite off the field memory?
DG: Graduation. You put so much work in, and to be able to celebrate that with family and friends is an awesome time. Also, it was such a special time because you’ve finally become that Duke alumna. That’s something that you can bring with you forever, and the alumni network is amazing, so to be a part of that was something special.
GoDuke.com: Name three foods you can’t live without.
DG: Steak, my mom’s homemade mac and cheese and my Nan’s brownies.
GoDuke.com: What are three things you’d like to do in the next 10 years?
DG: One, I would like to raise more awareness for mental health, and I want to have a walk for Tourette's. My little brother has Tourette's, so that’s something that I’d like to raise money and awareness for. I have a job lined up for next summer, and in the next 10 years, I just want to continue to grow professionally and be respected for what I do, and hopefully be in a leadership position. And then travel, as much as I can, whenever I can.
GoDuke.com: What are your favorite three things about the sport of field hockey?
DG: The speed. I think people take for granted how quick it is, especially on the turf, and especially when the turf is wet. The skill. I feel like you don’t realize how quick people’s hands are, and the type of precision you need to play the sport. And the mental aspect of it.
GoDuke.com: Who are three people, dead or alive, you’d have dinner with if you could?
DG: My pop. He passed away when I was a freshman in high school, but I would love to have dinner with him again. And I think Robin Lim, she was CNN’s hero of the year. I think women empowerment is really important, so she’s someone I’d like to have dinner with. And LeBron James.
