DURHAM, N.C. – A 6-0 shortstop/right-handed pitcher from Phelan, Calif., incoming freshman Ryan Day signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Duke baseball program in the fall of 2014.

“I want to welcome Ryan Day and his family to Duke,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “Ryan brings a very unique skill set as a middle infielder; he has elite arm strength and very good hands. He has produced impressive velocity from his position at shortstop, and has also been able to channel that arm strength into low-90s fastball numbers on the mound. Ryan has a short, repeatable batting stroke that will play well against the top pitching we see in the ACC.”

A three-time team captain and two-time all-league selection heading into his final season at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Day is ranked among the top 230 prospects nationally by Perfect Game and is also listed as one of the top 40 players at his position by the organization.

A right-handed hitter with a line-drive approach, Day hit .370 for the Grizzlies this past season, adding five doubles and three triples. In addition to providing a solid defensive presence, Day is a threat on the base paths, swiping 16 stolen bases in 17 attempts during his junior campaign.

Day has attracted the attention of several preeminent baseball organizations and is listed as a projected 2014 MLB Draft pick by both Diamond Prospects and Big League Futures. Day was also named a Top Prospect at the Perfect Game Elite National Showcase and Underclass Showcase.

“Ryan turned down numerous opportunities to play in the Pac 12 to come across the country because he values the unique academic experience at Duke,” added Pollard. “I know Coach Jordan is going to enjoy incorporating him into our infield group next fall.”

Day is one of 13 incoming recruits set to arrive this fall. will release each of the Blue Devils’ 2014 signing class, so check back for more information on all the future Duke players.
