Duke Resumes ACC Action with Virginia Tech Friday

DURHAM, N.C.—Fresh off of a comeback win over Appalachian State Wednesday night, the Duke University wrestling team returns to the mats against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils and No. 17 Hokies square off at a neutral site in Charlotte, N.C. Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The dual will take place at Charlotte Latin School with admission set at $5. Proceeds will benefit The Wounded Warrior Project. Tickets are available for purchase at www.charlottelatin.org/wrestlingtournamenttickets. Wrestling begins at 7:30 p.m. at Beck Student Activity Center.

Duke enters the ACC dual with a 4-7 overall record and 0-2 mark in conference action. The match against No. 17 Virginia Tech will be the Blue Devils’ fifth dual against a top-25 opponent. The bout will be the 37th between the two squads with the Hokies leading the series 23-13. Duke’s last win over Virginia Tech was Jan. 11, 1999.

The Blue Devils rallied to beat Appalachian State in their most recent bout getting wins at 149, 157, 174, 184, 197 and 285-pounds, including getting bonus points in the final four matches.

Redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown looks to remain unbeaten in ACC action and sports a 15-7 overall record and 8-3 mark in duals at 157 pounds. Seven of his wins have come by two or fewer points, including the exciting 6-5 upset of 13th-ranked Blaise Butler of Virginia.

Trey Adamson, Duke’s leader at 174 pounds, and 197-pounder Conner Hartmann join Kerr-Brown among those on the double-digit wins list with 12-7 and 12-6 records, respectively. Adamson has a team-high seven major decisions, while Hartmann is coming off of a clinching win at heavyweight for the Blue Devils against Appalachian State.

The Blue Devils feature five freshmen or redshirt freshmen in the lineup this season. Both Jake Faust at 149 pounds and Jacob Kasper at 184 own nine victories. Faust is unbeaten in his three duals, while Kasper is in search of his fourth dual victory Friday night.

Virginia Tech enters the match 13-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The Hokies’ lone two losses came against No. 9 Edinboro and No. 15 Virginia. Four Hokies are ranked among the top 20 with Chris Penny leading the way with No. 16 ranking at 197 pounds. Penny is 18-7 overall and 3-0 against ACC foes.

At 184 pounds 18th-ranked Nick Vetterlein sports a 16-5 record, while Joey Dance is 17th at 125 pounds with a 15-5 mark. Rounding out Virginia Tech’s ranked wrestlers is No. 19 Zach Neibert at 149 pounds. The redshirt senior is 12-6 overall and 9-4 in duals this season.

The Blue Devils return to action at home versus Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. versus VMI.
