Chapel Hill, N.C. – A handful of Duke track and field competitors traveled to the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday, competing in the Tar Heel Open. The competition comes one day after Duke’s women’s track and field team won the Carolina Cup.

Sophomore Megan Clark highlighted the Blue Devils on Saturday, posting a personal-best mark of 13-9.25 (4.20) en route to a first-place finish. The mark moved Clark into second on Duke's all-time indoor pole vault list.

Seniors Phil Fairleigh and Brian Atkinson dropped down in distance to the mile on Saturday, placing fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 4:26.14 and 4:28.58. The duo are likely set to return to the longer distances as the season progresses.

Four Blue Devil harriers competed in the 800 Saturday, with sophomore Jon Michael Hilsheimer leading Duke with a 10th-place finish. Sophomore Nyall Islam finished three places behind Hilsheimer, while freshman Brian Benesch competed in his first collegiate contest and finished in 14th. Senior Anthony Pollizzi rounded out the Duke contingent competing in the event, placing 30th overall.

Freshman Karly Gregory, a jumps specialist, made an appearance in the 200 Saturday, placing 22nd overall.

In the 3,000, four Blue Devils made their 2014 season debuts, with seniors Spencer Pecha and Lucas Talavan-Becker placing second and third, respectively. Freshmen Aaron Liberatore and Weston Carvalho entered the first collegiate indoor meet of their college careers, placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Sophomore Eddie Merenda moved down in distance following a 5,000 one week earlier, rounding out Duke’s competitors in the event after finishing eighth.
