DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke men’s and women’s track and field teams travel to Blacksburg, Va., Friday, Feb. 21, for the two-day Virginia Tech Challenge. The competition marks the final contest for Duke before the conference championship Feb. 27 in Clemson, S.C.

A number of Duke women’s and men’s multi-event athletes, including redshirt sophomores Karli Johonnot and Teddi Maslowski, junior Baily Murphy and senior Miray Seward, as well as redshirt senior Curtis Beach, junior Ian Rock and sophomore Robert Rohner are set to compete Friday and Saturday.

The men’s multi-event athlete contingent is slated to participate in the unseeded pole vault and the 60-meter hurdles Friday and the shot put and long jump Saturday. Rock leads the Duke multi-event athletes in the pole vault this season after clearing 16-2.75 (4.95) at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge while Beach posted the fastest 60m hurdle time of the season after finishing in a time of 8.43 at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Beach also recorded the farthest long jump with a mark of 23-7.00 (7.19) at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge. Rohner owns the farthest shot put among the Duke multi-event athletes this season, recording a distance of 41-10.25 (12.76) at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge.

The foursome of women multi-event athletes are set to compete in the 60m hurdles Friday night and the long jump and shot put, Saturday. Maslowski saw the fastest 60m hurdle time of 2014 among the multi-event athletes, clocking a time of 8.78 at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, while also posting a personal-best distance of 18-6.50 (5.65) in the long jump at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge, the farthest distance in the event for the multi-event athletes this season. Johonnot owns the farthest shot put distance as a multi-event athlete, posting a mark of 41-5.00 (12.62) at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

In addition to the multi-event athletes, a number of Duke competitors look to earn conference-qualifying standards. Junior Henry Farley posted a time of 1:53.48 at 800m this season, narrowly missing the 1:53.06 standard.

Senior Hannah Goranson is scheduled to compete in the 60m hurdles, entering the competition with a season-best mark of 8.64, which qualified the Los Altos, Calif., native for the conference championship, while junior Elizabeth Kerpon, freshman Madeline Kopp and junior Lauren Hansson all enter Saturday’s open 400 after securing conference-qualifying times in the event earlier this season at the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

In the throws, redshirt senior Michelle Anumba and redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals highlight the Blue Devils in the weight throw Friday night, with the duo posting marks of 56-7.50 (17.26) and 54-1.00 (16.48), respectively, in the event earlier in the season. Boal’s effort placed him second on Duke’s all-time list in the weight throw. Both Boals and Anumba return to action Saturday in the shot put. Anumba is joined by senior Erica Brand and redshirt freshman Urina Harrell. Brand currently owns the second-farthest shot put in Duke history, while Harrell posted the third farthest effort.

Field events begin Friday at 5 p.m. with the women’s triple jump. Track events begin at 5 p.m. Friday with the women’s 600m run. For a full schedule of events and entries, please visit the links above.
