Duke Signee Sierra Calhoun Named WBCA All-America

DURHAM, N.C. –  The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the 10-member WBCA High School All-America team on Wednesday with Duke signee Sierra Calhoun selected to the prestigious squad.

Other selections include Ariel Atkins (Texas), Jordin Canada (UCLA), Gabby Green (California), Alexis Jennings (Kentucky), Alexa Middleton (Tennessee), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Brianna Turner (Notre Dame), Jatarie White (South Carolina) and A’ja Wilson (undeclared).

Duke signees Azura Stevens and Erin Mathias were also named two of 20 WBCA All-America honorable mention selections.  

Calhoun, who is out of Brooklyn, N.Y., is averaging 22.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 4.1 steals for Christ The King H.S.  She helped lead her high school squad to a 20-3 overall record and opens the playoffs on Thursday evening.  Calhoun was also selected McDonald’s All-America recently.

A native of Cary, N.C., Stevens is averaging 28.8 points, 18.1 rebounds, 3.2 blocks, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals for the Cary Imps.  Her Cary squad has notched a 21-3 overall record on the season.  

Mathias, who is from Pittsburgh, Pa., attends Fox Chapel Area H.S.  The 6-4 post player averaged 17.3 points, 13.6 rebounds, 4.8 blocks and 1.4 steals as a junior.  

Any graduating senior can be nominated for the WBCA High School All-America Team by a high school or AAU coach who is an active WBCA member. College coaches are not eligible to nominate a player for consideration.  The 10-player All-America team and a 20-player honorable mention team are selected from the nominees by a selection committee composed of WBCA-member girls’ high school basketball coaches who represent nine geographical districts across the country.
