DURHAM, N.C. – The sixth-ranked Duke women’s lacrosse team opened ACC play against a high-scoring Maryland squad Saturday, falling to the third-ranked Terrapins 19-10 at Koskinen Stadium.

Down 9-5 at halftime, the Blue Devils (3-2, 0-1 ACC) opened the second period with two wins at the draw that resulted in a pair of quick goals. However Maryland (6-0, 1-0 ACC) answered with a 6-0 scoring run and tacked on four more inside the final seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Terrapins’ Beth Glaros tallied six goals on the day and teammate Taylor Cummings added five to go with seven draw controls. Sophomore Maddy Acton and juniors Kerrin Maurer and Erin Tenneson registered two markers each to pace the Duke attack.

“Maryland played a great game and they have a lot of threats,” said head coach Kerstin Kimel. “You shut down one big threat and then you have four or five others to deal with. I don’t think we got ourselves started off on a very good foot today, which I think hurt our confidence.”

Maryland jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on three scores by Glaros and two by Cummings. Acton put the Blue Devils on the board at 21:17 with an unassisted tally, and after another goal by Cummings, responded again to cut it to 6-2. Aided by wins at the draw, the Terrapins rattled off three more scores before Duke fired back with three, including a Taylor Trimble goal with nine seconds remaining on the clock.

The Blue Devils came out strong in the second half, as Trimble and senior Taylor Virden each corralled draw controls to fuel a pair of quick scores by seniors Maddy Morrissey and Tenneson. Turnovers would haunt Duke over the next several possessions, though, and despite some strong play from Kelsey Duryea in the net, the Terrapins took off on a 6-0 run. Cummings scored twice during that span, while Kelly McPartland, Brooke Griffin, Erin Collins and Taylor Salandra added one each to bring the score to 15-7 with 20 minutes remaining.

Maurer broke through with a free position goal at 10:22 and junior Brigid Smith followed with an 8-meter goal of her own to bring the margin back to six. But Maryland won the ensuing four draws and converted on the offensive end each time to secure the victory in the ACC opener for both teams. Sophomore Kelci Smesko recorded an unassisted goal with three seconds to go in regulation to bring the final score to 19-10.

“We struggled on the draw today,” Kimel said. “We were too often in a position where we could have competed better for the draw, so that’s got to be a big focus. And you can’t give a team like Maryland 40 shots. They’re going to score a lot of goals.”

The Terrapins logged 40 shots to 23 by the Blue Devils on the day and also led in ground balls (15-13) and at the draw (21-9). Duryea finished with 13 stops for her second double-digit save performance of the season and also had four ground balls and one caused turnover. Abbey Clipp totaled six saves for Maryland in the win.

Morrissey posted two caused turnovers and junior Gabby Moise registered a defensive save for Duke.

“A big thing you focus on when you play a great team early in the season is that they show you what you have to do better,” Kimel said.

The Blue Devils have a quick turnaround, hosting No. 14 Georgetown in a mid-week clash Wednesday, March 5 at 5 p.m. That contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
