DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Curtis Beach to learn more about the Albuquerque, N.M., native.

GoDuke.com: Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke:
Curtis Beach: My favorite thing is definitely the people I meet and get to know. It’s been a lot of fun just having the support of the team, being mentored by my coach, and all my professors.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite ‘in competition’ memory?
CB: My favorite in competition memory would have to be the 2012 indoor nationals. I had a “come from behind” victory and won the national championship. I needed to break the pentathlon 1000m world record in order to win the title and I did. It was just such an unbelievable experience because I had to come from behind. I had my family and my coaches there, and it was my coach’s first national champion. It was just so much fun because it was something I wanted to do for a long time before I even wanted to come here.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite ‘out of competition’ memory?
CB: That’s a hard one but I would say outside of competition and outside of athletics being a part of the focus program was really cool. My professor was Michael Gillespie and we had a really close group of students. We got to go on a trip to Puerto Rico and a trip to University of Virginia to really learn about the philosophy of politics. Having such a close group together away from the track was a really fun experience.

GoDuke.com: Can you describe your coach (Shawn) in three words?
CB: Okay, Coach Wilbourn in three words. Passionate, hardworking and motivated.

GoDuke.com: What’s your favorite thing about your sport?
CB: My favorite thing is just the practices to be honest. Just working towards goals, like goals me and my coach put high standards on. Being able to go out there every day, especially for intense practices for goals that we know are very hard to achieve. I think that is definitely my favorite part.

GoDuke.com: Name three other athletes you admire:
CB: It might be controversial but Tiger Woods and the way he works, his way of life and his mentality. I admire him and he is the one I really look up to .Also, I think the world record holder in my event Ashton Eaton is a huge motivator for me because I get to see him so much and compete with him and understand how he works to be the best athlete he is. A lot of my family members have been really great athletes and people to look up to. Probably the closest to my event would be my Aunt Sandy and she just had a great approach to competing and a great person that could mentor and able to approach running in the right way. She makes sure you have a good head on your shoulders, you don’t stress out too much, and you have fun when you are competing.

GoDuke.com: Name three foods you can’t live without:
CB: Green Chile. I don’t know if people know about it out here, but in New Mexico it’s one of the biggest things in terms of food. It’s really only grown there and I get it shipped out all the time. Number two, I love biscuits and gravy and number three would be banana pudding.

GoDuke.com: Three places you would like to travel:
CB: Rio, because the Olympics are there, I would like to travel there for that, hopefully to compete. I would say I would like to travel to some third world country just to see and experience it because I really haven’t had the chance to go out and see a completely different way of life. Maybe somewhere in the Caribbean, Asia or Africa to see something completely different that I’m not used to. So I would say Rio, maybe North Korea and Costa Rica.
