DURHAM, N.C. – Sixth-ranked Duke looks to rebound from a tough stretch Sunday, March 9 when it travels to Blacksburg, Va., to face ACC opponent Virginia Tech in a 1 p.m. contest at the Hokies’ Thompson Field.

Virginia Tech Series History
Sunday afternoon’s matchup marks the 17th all-time meeting between Duke and Virginia Tech with the Blue Devils leading the series, 16-0 ... Duke is 6-0 all-time when facing the Hokies on the road ... The Blue Devils have won nine consecutive regular season contests since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2005.

Last Time We Met
Kerrin Maurer and Makenzie Hommel each recorded hat tricks as Duke opened the 2013 season with a 17-9 victory over the Hokies at Koskinen Stadium Feb. 8, 2013 ... Maurer matched a single-game record with five assists ... Led by Maddie Salamone’s nine draw controls, the Blue Devils held a 14-13 advantage at the draw and outshot Virginia Tech 33-17 ... She leads the team this spring in points (30), goals (19) and assists (11) and ranks second in draw controls (13) ... The Setauket, N.Y., native was third in the ACC and top-20 nationally in points per game with a 5.20 clip at the start of the week ... She also ranked fourth in the conference in scoring at 3.40 goals per game.

Virden Quick on the Draw
Duke is 1-1 this spring when winning the draw controls category ... Senior defender Taylor Virden has been scrappy on the wings, leading the team with 20 draw controls this spring ... She ranked ninth in the ACC heading into the week and won five more draws Wednesday against Georgetown ... Virden won a career-high six draws last season against Vanderbilt (March 2, 2013) and has notched five draw controls on two occasions this year ... The Ellicott City, Md., native ranks sixth on Duke’s all-time list for career draw controls with 142 over her four seasons.

Devilish on Defense

Sophomore Kelci Smesko has tallied a point in each of the last seven contests while junior Brigid Smith has recorded a point in six consecutive outings.

On the Road Again
Duke faces just its second road test of the season Sunday at Virginia Tech ... Duke won its only other road contest this season, 11-8, at William & Mary Feb. 16 ... The program holds an all-time record of 89-52 when playing away from home.

Maurer, Virden Moving Up Career Lists
Senior defender Taylor Virden and junior attacker Kerrin Maurer provide veteran experience at both ends of the field ... Maurer paces the Blue Devils in points, goals and assists this season and currently ranks eighth all-time in career assists (70) and 16th in program history in career points (149) ... Maurer reached the 100-point barrier and topped the 50-assist milestone as a sophomore last season ... Virden leads the team in draw controls and caused turnovers in 2014 and ranks sixth all-time in career draw controls with 142 ... She is also approaching the 100-ground ball mark for her career with 93 over four seasons.
