Duke Opens Play at Schenkel Invite Friday

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke men's golf team returns to action March 14-16 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. The Blue Devils are coming off a ninth place finish earlier in the week at the General Jim Hackler Championship at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

The Blue Devils are joined in the field by No. 8 Central Florida, College of Charleston, Florida, host Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, NC State, North Florida, North Texas, No. 15 Texas, No. 13 UAB and No. 11 Virginia

Sophomore Motin Yeung will man the top spot in the lineup following a top 20 finish at the General Jim Hackler Championship. The Beijing, China naitve leads the Blue Devils in stroke average (73.0), top 10 finishes (2), top 20 finishes (3), under-par rounds (5), even-par or better rounds (8) and sub-par strokes per round (4.0). Yeung's best showing this season was a third place finish at The Farms Collegiate Invitational in February.

Freshmen Alexander Matlari and Max Greyserman occupy the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in head coach Jamie Green's lineup. Matlari, a freshman from Germany, has a pair of top 20 finishes and shares the team lead with three even-par efforts. He is also second on the team with four under-par rounds and seven rounds of even-par or better golf. Matlari enters the event with a 74.5 stroke average.

Greyserman has been steady throughout the season posting a counting team score in all 18 rounds. He holds a 74.7 stroke average with three under-par rounds.

Juniors Turner Southey-Gordon and Michael Ricaurte round out the Blue Devil attack for the Schenkel Invitational. Southey-Gordon has a 75.7 stroke average, while Ricaurte comes in at 77.1

Austin Cody, a senior from North Charleston, S.C., will compete in the event as an individual.

Duke has appeared in the Schenkel Invitational nine times and recorded three top 5 finishes, including a first place finish in 2004.

Duke opens play beginning at 8:51 a.m. Friday on the back nine at Forest Heights Country Club (par 72, 6,962 yards). The Blue Devils are paired with North Texas and Georgia State for the first round of the event.
