DURHAM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Duke women’s lacrosse team will face Notre Dame for the first time in ACC competition Friday evening at the Irish’s Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

Duke and Notre Dame will square off for the 12th time in program history Friday evening ... The Blue Devils lead the all-time series, 9-2 ... Duke is 4-0 historically when facing the Fighting Irish in South Bend ... The two teams will meet for the first time in ACC action.

Last Time We Met
Notre Dame took an early lead and held on for a 12-8 victory Apr. 3, 2008 at Koskinen Stadium ... Midfielders Sarah Bullard and Emma Hamm led the Blue Devils offensively with two goals each in the loss ... Duke won the ground ball battle, outshot the Irish and committed fewer turnovers but lost the draw by an 8-3 margin in the second half.

Duke vs. the ACC
The Blue Devils are 41-32 all-time in conference regular season games ... The Blue Devils are 2-3 this spring in ACC play with wins against Virginia (March 22) and Virginia Tech (March 9) and losses to Maryland (March 1), Syracuse (March 29) and Boston College (Apr. 5) ... The Fighting Irish are coming off of a 13-8 loss to Virginia last weekend at home and slipped two spots to No. 11 in this week’s IWLCA rankings ... Notre Dame is coached by Christine Halfpenny, who served as an assistant coach at Duke for three seasons (2004-06) ... Freshman Cortney Fortunato paces the attack with 44 points (33g, 11a) ... Margaret Smith (28) and Casey Pearsall (24) lead the Irish at the draw while Smith also has a team-high 42 ground balls ... Smith was the ACC leader in ground balls and caused turnovers entering the week ... In goal, Allie Murray is 6-4 with a 10.31 goals against average and a .439 save percentage ... As a team, Notre Dame ranks first in the ACC in ground balls and caused turnovers per game.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke (8-5, 2-3 ACC) went 1-1 last week with a road win at High Point and an ACC loss to then-No. 5 Boston College ... The Blue Devils are ranked seventh in this week’s IWLCA Coaches Poll ... Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer guides the offense with 39 goals and 24 assists while sophomore Kelci Smesko is second on the team with 34 points (24g, 10a) ... Returning All-American defender Taylor Virden leads the way in draw controls (50) and caused turnovers (16) ... Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, a second team All-America selection last spring, owns a 10.24 goals against average and a .432 save percentage in the net ... Duke’s balanced attack is outscoring opponents by a 185-131 margin ... The squad ranked sixth nationally in total points (266) and 12th in scoring offense (14.23 gpg) entering the week. 

Last Time Out
Duke stayed on pace with then-No. 5 Boston College in a high-scoring first half but ultimately suffered a 13-11 loss to the Eagles Saturday at Koskinen Stadium ... Sophomore Kelci Smesko led the Duke scoring effort in the regular season home finale, recording four goals on the day ... Senior Sydney Peterson and junior Kerrin Maurer also notched multiple tallies while Maurer and senior Taylor Virden combined for 11 draw controls to help the Blue Devils win the category, 15-11.

Against Ranked Opponents
Since the 2009 season, Duke is 36-34 against ranked teams ... The Blue Devils have lost just five times to teams outside the top-10 in the past four years ... The squad went 5-5 against ranked opponents in 2013 ... Duke is 1-5 against ranked foes this season following last Saturday’s 13-11 loss to then-No. 5 Boston College.

Familiar Foes
Duke and Notre Dame have faced six of the same opponents this season ... Both squads collected wins over Louisville and Virginia Tech and went 3-3 overall against their mutual opponents.

In the Apr. 7 edition of the NCAA’s Division I team statistics, the Blue Devils ranked sixth nationally in points with 266 through 13 games ... Duke also ranked among the top 20 teams in the country in scoring offense (12th, 14.23gpg), draw controls (13th, 13.85/gm) and scoring margin (19th, 4.15gpg).

Maurer Quarterbacking the Offense
Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer is once again one of the Blue Devils’ most dependable playmakers up front ... She leads the team this spring in points (63), goals (39) and assists (24) and ranks second in draw controls (43) ... The Setauket, N.Y., native ranked second in the ACC and eighth nationally in points per game entering the week ... Maurer was also third in the conference in scoring at 3.00 goals per game and ranked ninth nationally in goals (39).

Virden Quick on the Draw
Duke is 6-2 this spring when winning the draw controls category ... Senior defender Taylor Virden has been scrappy on the wings, leading the team with 50 draw controls ... She ranked sixth in the ACC in draws entering the week ... Virden won a career-high six draws last season against Vanderbilt (March 2, 2013) and matched that total with six against Virginia (March 22) ... The Ellicott City, Md., native moved into second on Duke’s all-time list for career draw controls against Syracuse (March 29) and owns 172 over her four seasons.

Virden, Duryea Among ACC Leaders
Returning IWLCA All-Americans Taylor Virden and Kelsey Duryea continue to anchor the defense in 2014 ... Duryea ranked third in the conference in ground balls per game entering the week ... Duryea was also second among ACC goalkeepers with an average of 7.38 saves per game ... Virden ranked fifth in the league in caused turnovers per game.

Scoring Streaks
Junior Kerrin Maurer has tallied at least one point in a career-high 19 consecutive games dating back to last season ... The Setauket, N.Y., native has scored multiple goals in all 13 games this spring and recorded multiple assists eight times ... Sophomore Kelci Smesko (14 games) is also in the midst of career-long scoring streak while senior Sydney Peterson has matched a career high (4).

Maurer, Virden Moving Up Career Lists
Senior defender Taylor Virden and junior attacker Kerrin Maurer provide veteran experience at both ends of the field ... Maurer paces the Blue Devils in points, goals and assists this season and currently ranks fourth in program history in career assists (83) and 11th in career points (182) ... Maurer reached the 100-point barrier and topped the 50-assist milestone as a sophomore last season ... Virden leads the team in draw controls and caused turnovers in 2014 and ranks second all-time in career draw controls with 172 ... She reached the 100-ground ball mark for her career against Virginia (March 22), becoming the 26th player in Duke history to achieve the feat.
