FT. MYERS, Fla. – Former Duke standout Ashley Twichell took home the women’s 10K title at the inaugural Crippen Cup over the weekend in the centerpiece event of the Open Water Swimming Festival.

Twichell held off late charges from second-place finisher Christine Jennings (2:04:24.11) and Emily Brunemann (2:04.24.53) to win the women’s race with a 2:04:23.65 clocking.

The Crippen Cup was established in memory of famed open water swimmer Fran Crippen. The 10K races were held at the Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club, site of previous USA Swimming national championship events.

A 2011 graduate of Duke, Twichell was an All-American and ACC champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle during her collegiate career while also receiving Academic All-America recognition. She remains the program record holder in the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle.

Twichell won a gold medal in the women’s 10K open water swimming event at the World University Games in July and was fifth in the women’s 10K open water race at the 2013 U.S. Open Water National Championships. A member of the U.S. open water national team in 2011-12 and 2012-13, she also successfully defended her title at last month’s 2014 Midmar  Mile in South Africa.
