Duke Set for ACC Championships in Chapel Hill
Wednesday 04/16/2014  -  Duke Sports Information

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke track and field team travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., Thursday, April 17, to compete in the three-day ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In 2013, the women’s team earned a fourth-place conference championship finish while the men's team placed fifth.

In the men’s competition, 19 performances from the Duke track and field team rank among the ACC’s top-10 heading into this weekend’s contest.

On the track, junior Shaun Thompson owns the seventh-fastest 5,000-meter time in the conference this season, running a time of 13:58.8 at the Raleigh Relays. Thompson also ran the fourth-fastest 3,000m steeplechase time of 9:07.1 one week later at the VertKlasse Meeting.

Joining Thompson in the 5,000 is graduate student Mike Moverman, whose time of 14:07.3 is the 10th-fastest in the conference this season. In the 3,000m steeplechase, senior Christian Britto posted the eighth-fastest time in the conference after running a 9:14.8 earlier in the season.

Graduate student Brian Atkinson and junior Nate McClafferty round out Duke’s contingent with top-10 individual performances on the track. Atkinson owns the fourth-fastest 10,000m time in the conference, running a 29:27.8 in Raleigh. McClafferty posted the fifth-fastest 1,500m time after clocking a 3:45.8, also in Raleigh.

Numerous Duke throwers also enter the weekend’s competition with top-10 performances during the season. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals posted both the sixth-farthest shot put distance (56-8.00 (17.27)) and the 10th-best discus mark (170-4.00 (51.93)). Joining Boals in the discus is redshirt senior Austin Gamble, Duke’s record holder in the event. Gamble sent the discus 185-10.00 (56.66) at the VertKlasse Meeting, ranking him third in the conference.

Duke posted three top-10 performances in the javelin, with redshirt sophomore Thomas Lang recording a conference-leading distance of 227-0.00 (69.21). In addition to Lang, junior Zach Robertshaw (195-6.00 (59.59)) and junior Ian Rock (180-11.00 (55.14)) also appear among the conference’s top 10 in the event.

In the jumps, the high jump duo of sophomore Carl Heinz and redshirt junior Michael Krone enter Friday’s competition with the fifth-highest clearances this season at 6-10.25 (2.09). Senior pole vaulter Justin Amezquita also earned the fifth-highest mark in his event with a clearance of 16-6.75 (5.05).

The Duke women’s track and field team saw 16 top-10 performances during the outdoor season, with redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski posting three of the 16. Maslowski opened the outdoor season with a school-record mark of 19-4.25 (5.90) in the long jump, which ranks ninth in the conference this season. Most recently, Maslowski earned her second school record of the season, finishing the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.92 at last week’s Joe Hilton Invitational. Maslowski’s heptathlon point total of 5,209, earned at the Texas Relays, ranks fourth in the conference this season.

Fellow heptathlete and redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot also posted multiple top-10 performances in 2014, including a mark of 5-10.00 (1.78) in the high jump, ranking tied for third in the conference and a heptathlon point total of 5,342, also ranking third in the conference.

Pole vaulter and sophomore Megan Clark enters Friday’s competition with the highest clearance in the conference at 14-7.25 (4.45). Clark has cleared 13-7.25 (4.15) or higher in all four of her appearances this season.

A trio of throwers, redshirt senior Michelle Anumba and freshmen Amarie Bremel and Christine Streisel registered top-10 throws in the conference. Anumba’s distance of 52-7.25 (16.03) in the shot put is the fifth-farthest in the event this season, while Streisel’s javelin throw of 164-6.00 (50.15) is the fourth-farthest in the conference. Bremel rounds out the Duke throwing contingent, posting a throw of 155-5.00 (47.38) in the discus, which ranks seventh this season.

On the track, Duke’s sprints saw juniors Lauren Hansson and Elizabeth Kerpon record the ninth-fastest 100m time and the fourth-fastest 200m time, respectively, in the conference. Hansson clocked a 100m time of 11.83, a Duke school record, while Kerpon ran a 200m time of 23.69, also a school record.

Junior Abby Farley and freshman Haley Meier also enter the preliminary rounds of the conference championships with strong showings earlier in the season. Farley’s 800m time of 2:07.78 currently ranks as the fourth-fastest time in the conference at the distance this season. Meier’s 1,500m time of 4:21.63, converted from a mile time of 4:42.56 run one week earlier at the Joe Hilton Invitational, also ranks fourth in the conference this season.

Senior Ashley Berry, competing in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays, completed the race in a time of 10:42.3, the eighth-fastest time at the distance in the conference this season.

The championships begin Thursday morning with the men’s hammer, scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. All three days of competition will air LIVE on ESPN3, beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday.
