Christina Gibbons, sophomore Toni Payne and incoming freshman Morgan Reid each have received invites for the final U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team training camp from May 11-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The U.S. team is preparing for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup that will take place in Canada in August.DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University sophomore
Head Coach Michelle French will choose a 20-player roster following the camp to travel to France in June for two matches against the France Under-20 Women’s National Team. After the trip to Europe, the USA will have a final domestic training camp in July before heading to Canada for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which runs from Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. The U.S. will face Germany, China PR and Brazil in Group B play.
This will be the third straight training camp for Gibbons, who recently completed her freshman campaign with the Blue Devils. A product of Raleigh, N.C., Gibbons started all 24 contests in 2013, guided the Blue Devil defense to seven shutouts and played a team-best 2,228 minutes, which was a school-record for a freshman. One of the most consistent players on the team in 2013, Gibbons registered assists against Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament, Virginia Tech and Kennesaw State. Payne, who is out of Birmingham, Ala., started 21 of 24 matches as a rookie for the Blue Devils. The 5-3 midfielder/forward tallied three goals and five assists for 11 points on the year. Payne collected goals against Maryland, Notre Dame and Miami, while notching a career-best two assists against Pittsburgh.
Reid, who is out of Raleigh, N.C., will train for the first time with the U-20 squad, as she closes out her senior campaign at Cardinal Gibbons H.S. She was a member of the 2012 U-17 U.S. World Cup team and is ranked as the No. 1 defender in the 2014 class by TopDrawerSoccer.com. As a junior, Reid netted 21 goals and 23 assists and is a two-time All-State selection.
