Duke Adds Four Freshmen to 2014 Roster

DURHAM, N.C. – Fresh off its 11th ACC Championship and league-leading 18th NCAA Tournament appearance, the Duke volleyball program and head coach Jolene Nagel are excited to announce the signing of four high school seniors to national letters of intent. The incoming freshman class is set to join the Blue Devils for the 2014 season, Duke’s 16th under Nagel’s guidance.
 
Duke’s incoming class includes outside hitter Cadie Bates (Temecula, Calif.), setter/defensive specialist Nicole Elattrache (Los Angeles, Calif.), middle blocker Anna Kropf (Overland Park, Kan.) and setter Emma Paradiso (Izmir, Turkey).
 
“We are very excited to welcome a talented recruiting class for 2014,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “All four have been very successful on championship high school teams and competed at the highest level nationally in club. This group brings great academic and athletic resumes, and is ready to help Duke enter the national conference expansion era.”
 
Cadie Bates
6-2, Outside Hitter
Temecula, Calif. (Great Oak High School)
 
Prior to Duke: Four-year letterwinner under coach Mark Motluck at Great Oak High School in Temecula, Calif. … Among the 150 players named PrepVolleyball.com All-America … Also a PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace … Ranked the No. 58 player in the nation and No. 20 player in California according to MaxPreps.com … Helped Great Oak to its best record in program history at 27-2 … Guided the Wolfpack to the 2013 Southwestern League championship and advance to the CIF-SS Division 1AA semifinals … Led Great Oak with 234 kills and also registered 166 digs during her senior season … Garnered league MVP, first team all-area, first team All-CIF-SS Division 1AA,  first team all-state and Citrus Belt Area Athletic Directors Association Senior Female Athlete of the Year honors … Senior year, played club with WAVE Volleyball and coaches Brent Hilliard and Jud Buechler … Along with current Blue Devil Alyse Whitaker, also played club volleyball for Temecula Viper Elite and coach Dana Burkholder … Selected to the High Performance Youth National A2 Team as well as the Olympic Development Program in Colorado Springs … First team all-league, second team all-area and team MVP as a junior … earned second team all-league honors as a sophomore and honor mention accolades as a freshman … Four-year Scholar-Athlete.
 
Personal: Born Cadie Michelle Bates on July 25, 1996 in Orange, Calif. … Daughter of Michael and Mary Lyn Bates … Father played football at Miami (Ohio) … Has an older sister, Carlee … Sister plays soccer at the University of Montana.
 
Nagel on Bates: “Cadie is a high-flying, hard-hitting outside hitter who plays with passion. Her upbeat personality and smile brings fun and energy to the court. She has excellent skills and decision-making abilities as an outside hitter. She is very competitive and loves a challenge.”
 
Nicole Elattrache
5-7, Setter
Los Angeles, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake School)
 
Prior to Duke: Four-year letterwinner under coach Adam Black at Harvard-Westlake School in Sherman Oaks, Calif. … Ranked the No. 192 player in the country and No. 35 player in California according to MaxPreps.com … Helped Harvard-Westlake to a 26-12 overall record and 9-1 mark in the CIF Southern Section as a senior … An All-CIF and all-area as a senior … Four-time all-league choice … Three-time team MVP … Voted most inspirational her senior year … Totaled over 900 assists and 400 digs during her senior campaign to go along with 52 service aces … Also played for the Sunshine Hurley Volleyball Club and coach Cari Klein … Four-year Honor Roll selection … National French Honor Society member.
 
Personal: Born Nicole Helene Elattrache on November 2, 1995 in Los Angeles, Calif. … Daughter of Neal and Tricia Elattrache … Has two younger sisters, Natalie and Eva.
 
Nagel on Elattrache: “Nicole is a talented setter and defensive player who holds her own digging the very best hitters. She is small in stature but is a leader on the court and a wonderful teammate. Her setting skill along with her defensive abilities makes her a versatile asset for Duke. Her competitive nature is also exciting to have in the gym.”
 
Anna Kropf
6-1, Middle Blocker
Overland Park, Kan. (St. Teresa’s Academy)
 
Prior to Duke: Four-year letterwinner under coach Abbie Lane at St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Mo. … Ranked the No. 5 player in Kansas according to MaxPreps.com … Received the prestigious Evelyn Gates Award as Kansas City’s best prep volleyball player … Earned honorable mention Under Armour All-America honors … Amassed 222 kills, 131 digs, 57 blocks and an efficient .559 hitting percentage as a senior … Led the Stars to a 27-9 overall record and an appearance in the district title match … First team all-state, all-region and all-district honoree … Four-time academic all-state … Also played for the KC Power club volleyball team and coaches Mike and Danielle Stowell, garnering 16 Open USAV Junior Nationals All-Tournament Team distinction … Member of the National Honor Society … National Merit Commended Student … Rensselaer Medal Award recipient … Four-time First Honors selection.
 
Personal: Born Anna Katherine Kropf on May 25, 1996 in Overland Park, Kan. … Daughter of Brad and Jenny Kropf … Has two younger brothers, Tommy and John, and two younger sisters, Lauren and Julia.
 
Nagel on Kropf: “Anna is a talented physical athlete who will continue to grow and get stronger as she arrives on campus. Her elevation off one foot, quickness to block, size and explosiveness make her a fun hitter to watch. Anna is driven on the court and in the classroom. We look forward to working with her daily.”
 
Emma Paradiso
5-9, Setter
Izmir, Turkey (Isikkent School)
 
Prior to Duke: Four-year letterwinner at Isikkent School in Izmir, Turkey … Team captain for both high school and club teams … Participated in the Turkish Nationals with club team in each of the past six years … As a sophomore, helped club team improve to second in the league and maintained that position the next two seasons.
 
Personal: Born Emma Paradiso on May 15, 1996 in Konak, Turkey … Daughter of Elvio and Hanne Paradiso … Father is a citizen of Italy, while mother is a citizen of Denmark … Father played professional volleyball in both Italy and Turkey from 1978-2005.
 
Nagel on Paradiso: “Emma is a talented, smart setter who has been around volleyball her entire life. As a setter, she makes good decisions and has excellent location. She is a supportive teammate and does a great job understanding her hitters and their strengths.”
