DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women’s soccer incoming freshmen Imani Dorsey and Morgan Reid were each named Gatorade State Players of the Year for Maryland and North Carolina, respectively, recently.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Dorsey, a 5-foot-7 senior midfielder, led Our Lady of Good Counsel High School to a 13-1-6 record and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Tournament title this past season. Dorsey scored 15 goals and passed for seven assists. A member of the U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women’s National Team,
Dorsey was an All-America selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for both her high school and club play.

The 2013 Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year, Dorsey missed most of her junior year with a concussion. She concluded her prep soccer career with 51 goals and 30 assists with the Falcons.  Dorsey has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.

“Imani Dorsey can impact and change a game in seconds,” said Ashly Kennedy, head coach of Archbishop Spalding High, who earned Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year honors in 2002-03. “Imani is very poised and doesn’t seem like a threat all the time, but not only can she take a game over, she can also assist in changing a game.”

Reid, who is out of Cardinal Gibbons H.S. in Raleigh, N.C., led the Crusaders to a 20-2-2 record and an appearance in the Class 3A East State Tournament quarterfinals. Reid scored 24 goals and passed for nine assists on the season, while missing the first two state tournament games to participate in a training camp with the U.S. Soccer Under-20 Women’s National Team. A two-time club Youth All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, she is also a three-time Class 3A First Team All-State honoree. She closed her career with 58 goals and 50 assists in her prep soccer career.

Reid has maintained an A average in the classroom. A student ambassador at Cardinal Gibbons, she has volunteered locally with Adopt-A-Family, providing goods and gifts to underprivileged families, and as a youth basketball referee.

Morgan Reid is a great player,” said Scott Summers, head coach of Hunt High. “She reads the field really well; she makes quick decisions and is very vocal.”
