DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior safety Jeremy Cash was named to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the top defensive back in college football.
Cash, who also appeared on the preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy, enters 2014 as Duke’s starter at the Strike safety position. In that spot as a redshirt sophomore this past season, Cash amassed 121 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
A 2013 All-America second team selection by USA Today and an All-ACC first team pick by the league’s media, Cash is ranked as college football’s No. 7 safety by Lindy’s Sports. His 121 tackles were the second-most in the ACC – trailing only teammate David Helton’s 133 – and he totaled 10 or more tackles in five games last season.
The Jim Thorpe Award is one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
Cash is one of 43 letterwinners returning to Duke in 2014. The Blue Devils open the season on August 30 against Elon at Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available at http://www.goduke.com/footballtix or by calling (919) 681-BLUE.
