DURHAM -- In the third and final segment of the Blue Devil Network’s Inside Training Camp series, redshirt senior defensive end Dezmond Johnson and freshman cornerback Zach Muñiz give us a behind the scenes look at the grind and hard work each day brings while being in camp. The senior and freshman give their differing perspectives on the progress the team has made during camp with the season’s first kickoff just more than a week away.

Johnson, a Nashville, TN native, has played more than 900 career snaps. Not only does Johnson possess on-field experience but has anchored the defense with extraordinary size, speed and strength.  Johnson is part of a trio of three-time Academic All-ACC selections on the Duke roster, joining senior linebacker David Helton and redshirt senior offensive guard Laken Tomlinson, the subject of an earlier edition of Inside Training Camp.

Johnson has appeared in all 24 games, tallying six starts. He totaled 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one quarterback sack, one pass breakup, four quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries in 2014 while serving as the backup to starting left end and team captain Justin Foxx.

Freshman cornerback Zach Muñiz joins the Blue Devils from Chesterfield, MO. A second team all-state honoree, the 5-11, 170- pound  athlete was charted as the No. 57 cornerback in the nation by Muñiz made three state playoff appearances while at Christian Brothers College and was a two-time all-conference selection.

The Blue Devils open the season on August 30 against Elon at Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available at or by calling (919) 681-BLUE.
