DURHAM, N.C. – Fresh off a 3-0 weekend at the Duke Invitational, the Duke volleyball team is set for its fourth home match in five days as the Blue Devils host Big South opponent Campbell Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (3-0) cruised past North Florida in the season opener Friday before downing High Point in four sets. The Blue Devils wrapped up their annual home tournament with a sweep of Furman Saturday afternoon. Sophomore libero Sasha Karelov, sophomore middle blocker Alyse Whitaker and senior outside hitter Jeme Obeime garnered all-tournament team accolades after guiding Duke to an undefeated weekend.
Karelov led the team defensively, totaling 42 digs (4.20 d/s) while helping Duke hold its opponents to a combined .199 hitting percentage. Obeime knocked down a team-best 49 kills to pace a Duke offence which average 15.30 kills per set. Whitaker was solid in the middle, adding 23 kills and a team-best 13 blocks.
Campbell (3-0) is also undefeated on the year after winning the NCCU Invitational. The Camels picked up wins over NC Central, Wofford and Valparaiso to take the tournament title. Junior Mary Crema earned tournament MVP recognition, while Lorin Thomas and Summer Schuitema garnered all-tournament team accolades for their efforts.
Tuesday’s match marks the seventh all-time meeting between Duke and Campbell. The Blue Devils lead the series, 6-0, and have yet to drop a set to the Camels. The two teams last met in 2011, a 3-0 Blue Devil victory in Cameron.
Duke travels north this weekend to take on Big Ten foes Michigan and Michigan State. The Blue Devils and the Wolverines square off Friday at 7 p.m., before Duke takes the court against the Spartans Saturday at 5 p.m.
