DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University head women’s lacrosse coach Kerstin Kimel has signed a contract extension through the 2020 season, as announced Wednesday, Sept. 3 by the school’s Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White.
A five-time ACC Coach of the Year, Kimel has led the women’s lacrosse program from its inception in 1996, compiling a record of 241-118 in 19 seasons. She has guided the Blue Devils to 17 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the third-longest streak in the nation. During her tenure, Kimel has also directed Duke to six national semifinal appearances, four ACC regular season titles and one ACC Tournament championship.
Since Kimel’s arrival in Durham, the program has produced 55 All-America selections, 69 all-region honorees and 59 All-ACC picks, in addition to placing seven players on the U.S. National Team. Under her watch the Blue Devils have also achieved equal success in the classroom, pacing the conference in All-ACC Academic Team selections since the award’s inception in 2006.
“Kerstin represents all that we try to achieve in Duke Athletics,” said Senior Deputy Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Kennedy. “While her success on the field is evident, even more important is her total commitment to the welfare of her players and to their immersion in the academic life of the university. There is no better measure of this commitment than the truly impressive record of achievement across a wide variety of professional careers of the graduates of the Duke Women’s Lacrosse program.”
Duke enjoyed another successful season under Kimel’s direction in 2014, compiling an 11-8 ledger to go along with the program’s 10th straight trip to the NCAA quarterfinals. The program had two or more players earn All-America honors for the 16th consecutive year as defender Taylor Virden was selected to the first team and Kerrin Maurer earned a spot on the second team. Virden and Maurer were joined on the all-conference teams by Maddy Morrissey and Taylor Trimble. In addition, five Blue Devils were named to the All-ACC Academic Team and Duke led the ACC with four student-athletes on the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.
In 20 seasons as a head coach, Kimel has amassed a career ledger of 245-126 (.660), marking the seventh-highest win total among active coaches. She is one of just 11 active Division I coaches with 200 or more wins after registering her 200th career victory March 16, 2011.
