DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's soccer senior striker Brian White scored two goals and the Blue Devils held Fordham scoreless in a 3-0 victory to win the 2017 John Rennie Nike Invitational. Daniele Proch added the third goal for the Blue Devils.

“I’m happy with the overall performance today and look forward to building on it.”

Duke (2-0-0), garnering a 2-0 win over UCF Friday night, owns two clean sheets, marking the first time since 2004 it has posted shutouts in the first two games to start a campaign. Fordham drops to 0-1-1 after picking up a scoreless draw Friday night.

Markus Fjørtoft, Carter Manley, Brian White and Brandon Williamson all were named to the All-Tournament team with Fjørtoft earning the Most Valuable Player honor after anchoring the defense to two shutouts and scoring one goal.

Brian White is such a dangerous player for us,” said head coach John Kerr. “He holds the ball well, brings others into the game and he can also create havoc by himself. I’m very pleased for him and really glad he got that second goal.”

The Blue Devils dominated play Sunday, outshooting the Rams 18-4 for the game. Will Pulisic made one save in the victory, his second shutout of the year. Duke has already matched its total of shutouts from a season ago.

Duke was on the attack from the opening whistle, creating dangerous looks in the offensive third. After coming up empty-handed in the box in the early minutes, Proch drew a penalty kick in the 15th minute. The striker stepped up and buried it in the corner to put the Blue Devils up 1-0.

After losing a bit of rhythm midway through the opening half, the Blue Devils regained their composure and had quality opportunities that ended up being near misses as they headed into the locker room with the 1-0 advantage.

Fordham did have a couple of dangerous opportunities during the opening half with a wide-open shot from 10 yards sailing over the goal and Manley recovering beautifully to stop a dangerous counterattack down the right side. Manley timed his step to the ball perfectly to cut off the angle for the service to a wide-open Fordham runner in the middle.

Just seven minutes into the second half, White, after missing a couple of looks in the first half, took a beautiful through ball from rookie Daniel Wright and slid it past Fordham goalie Rashid Nuhu for a 2-0 cushion. Nuhu posted three saves in the setback.

It was 30 minutes and numerous opportunities later when White took a throw-in from Max Moser and curled a shot into the left upper 90 for the 3-0 lead. It was the first multiple-goal performance by a Blue Devil this season and the first since Williamson had two against Notre Dame last October.

Proch became the latest Blue Devil to score his first points in a Duke jersey, joining Wright and Frick. Wright finished the weekend with two assists.

Duke is back at home Friday, Sept. 1 against High Point. The game will kick off at 2 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
