TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Spencer Furman and redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez both won their opening round singles matches in the main draw of the Saint Francis ITA Men’s All-American Championships on Thursday.
Furman, ranked No. 44 in the fall Oracle/ITA ledger, downed Tim Ruehl of Arizona State 6-4, 7-5. No. 34 Alvarez, playing his first collegiate match in 11 months, came back to defeat Georgia's Nathan Ponwith, ranked No. 32, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The two will play in the Round of 16 on Friday.
In the doubles main draw, Furman and classmate Nick Stachowiak, the No. 12 team this fall, fell to No. 22 Ponwith and Emil Reinberg, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Furman and Stachowiak will play in the consolation draw Friday.
