DURHAM, N.C. – Fans of the Duke men’s basketball program took their first look at the 2017-18 squad during the Blue Devils' ninth annual Countdown to Craziness presented by Delta Air Lines event Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils took the court for a 20-minute Blue/White scrimmage with the Blue Team coming away with a 43-41 victory thanks to a game-winning three pointer by freshman Alex O’Connell with 22 seconds left in the contest. Senior Grayson Allen and freshman Gary Trent, Jr., tied for the scoring lead, finishing with 13 points each. Freshmen Marvin Bagley III (12) and Wendell Carter, Jr., (11) both reached double figures.
Sophomore Javin DeLaurier led the way with nine rebounds and two blocks.
Through the first 10 minutes of action, neither squad led by more than five points. The White Team trailed 17-13 with 11:21 to go before responding and taking a 30-23 lead with 6:34 to play.
The Blue Team rallied behind Trent, Jr.’s consecutive three pointers to take a 31-30 advantage at the 5:27 mark. The lead would not be more than three points for either side the rest of the way.
With 1:39 to go and the score tied 38-38, a Jack White free throw put the White Team up 39-38. Carter, Jr.’s layup with 54 ticks left put the Blue Team in front 49-39. Bagley III answered with a layup with 36 seconds remaining the pushed the White Team up 41-40. O’Connell nailed the final shot with a corner three, resulting in a 43-41 final score.
Duke opens exhibition play Friday Oct. 27, hosting Northwest Missouri State in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
