INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. –  The Duke women’s tennis team will be represented in both the singles and doubles semifinals after a strong Friday at the ITA Fall National Championships presented by Oracle.

Senior Samantha Harris continued her strong play on Friday. The Melbourne, Australia native opened the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Denver’s Julia O’Laughlin. Harris followed that up with a victory over the ITA’s third-ranked player, Pepperdine’s Ashley Lahey, 6-3, 6-3. It is the second time this fall Harris has beaten a player ranked in the ITA’s top five and she has won 10 of her last 11 matches overall. Freshman Kelly Chen also got a win in her first singles match of the day, beating Auburn’s 60th-ranked Taylor Russo 6-4, 6-4. Chen’s run ended in the next round though, bowing out against Syracuse’s 38th-ranked Gabriela Knutson 6-4, 6-4.

Harris and Chen were drawn against Georgia’s 34th-ranked tandem of Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc in the doubles main draw quarterfinals. The pair reached the semifinals for the second straight tournament after a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. Harris and Chen are now 9-1 as a doubles pair, including 4-1 against ranked duos. Juniors Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin bowed out of the doubles consolation draw against Florida International’s Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler 7-6 (5), 6-4. McCarthy and Hamlin finish the fall season 9-2 as a doubles pair and a perfect 4-0 against nationally ranked opponents.

Harris will be trying to reach the finals for the second straight tournament after she did so in the ITA Carolina Regional Championship. Her semifinal opponent will be Texas’ 24th-ranked Bianca Turati.  Harris and Chen will battle Stanford’s Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon for a spot in the doubles final.

Senior Rebecca Smaller, sophomore Meible Chi, and freshman Ema Lazic will all begin play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational on Saturday as well. Smaller and Chi will play in doubles matches at 9 a.m. and all three will play in singles starting at 10:30 a.m. The Kitty Harrison will take place at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
