DURHAM, N.C. – With a career-high performance by fifth-year senior Lexie Brown, the 17th-ranked Duke women’s basketball team defeated NC State, 69-56, in the ACC home opener Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the victory, the Blue Devils snapped a three-game losing streak and are 12-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Brown brought in 34 points, which is tied for the ninth-most in school history for a single game, and hit 10-of-21 from the floor, 7-of-13 from behind the arc and went 7-of-9 from the foul line. The Suwanee, Ga., native picked up a team-high eight boards to go along with three assists and one steal in an overall performance in front of a loud crowd.
The Blue Devils shot 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from three-point land in the first frame with contributions from Brown and redshirt sophomore Haley Gorecki to give them 11 and 10 points, respectively. Solid ball movement allowed the Blue Devils to find the open trey and give them the 23-5 lead through the first 10 minutes.
NC State’s Aislinn Konig connected on her second trey of the afternoon to start the second quarter before freshman Jade Williams and senior Erin Mathias drained two jumpers just inside the three-point line. The Blue Devils had some difficulty possessing the ball as six turnovers in the second allowed the Wolfpack to capitalize for eight points. After trailing 19 to Duke, NC State came with eight with under one minute to play in the first half before Brown notched her fourth trey to put Duke up 36-25 at the half.
Brown led all scorers with 16 while Gorecki had 10 after the first 20 minutes of action.
NC State opened the second halve with a 6-0 run and held Duke scoreless for three and a half minutes, allowing the Wolfpack to cut the lead to four. Gorecki and Brown hit three treys to give the duo eight combined through 30 minutes of play. Duke went on a 9-0 run to hold a 55-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from behind the arc this afternoon and were led by Brown with seven. Duke also dished 18 assists, picked up nine steals for 13 points and held the Wolfpack to 32.8 percent shooting.
Williams, who made her first collegiate start, tallied three blocks and pulled down seven rebounds while Gorecki finished the contest with 13 points, her seventh straight double-digit scoring game.
The Blue Devils return to the court Thursday, Jan. 11 in Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on Wake Forest. The contest against the Demon Deacons will tipoff at 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
