DURHAM, N.C. – With less than a month standing between the Duke Blue Devils and the beginning of their inaugural season, head coach Marissa Young announced the addition of sophomore transfer Dominique Salinas Wednesday.
“She’s jumped right in and I think she’s going to be a big factor for us in the outfield as well as at the plate,” Young said. “She comes to us with some experience of playing the Southeastern Conference and I’m excited for how she is going to help us.”
The Corpus Christi, Texas, native comes to Duke via Ole Miss. There she saw action in 16 games, primarily as a pinch runner while also seeing time in the outfield. Salinas drove in five runs and scored five of her own while also recording a double, home run and stolen base. She shined brightest at the Houston Classic for the Rebels, hitting a bases-clearing double against Rhode Island Feb. 18 and following with a two-run homer the next day to total five RBI in just three at-bats.
“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to come to Duke and to be a part of Team One,” Salinas said. “You get the full package here with academics and athletics, especially with being able to help build the foundation of this softball program. It’s a blessing to be a part of this program and to get an education of a lifetime that sets you up beyond playing softball. I’m excited for this historical first season and to be a part of the Duke family.”
Prior to heading to Ole Miss, Salinas was a four-year standout at Richard King High School in Corpus Christi. The outfielder was named to the 2016 Preseason All-Star Team as a senior and was twice named to the 28-6A First Team All-South Texas team, as well as earning 28-6A All-District honors all four seasons. Salinas’ talents are not just limited to the diamond, as she earned all-district honors twice for the RKHS basketball program and is a two-time 28-6A Cross Country District Champion.
Off the court, Salinas is a stud in the classroom as a two-time 28-6A All-South Texas Academic Team honoree and a member of the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars.
Salinas and the Blue Devils will open their first season in program history in Boca Raton, Fla., taking on Florida Atlantic in a doubleheader Thursday, Feb. 8 starting at 5 p.m. ET. Duke will also face Ohio State, Michigan State and Boston University to wrap up the opening weekend.
