Divers Complete Day One at Zone B Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Six Duke divers reached event finals Monday to open competition at the 2018 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, hosted by Tennessee at the Volunteers’ Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

On the three-meter springboard, freshman Teddy Zeng impressed in his Zone diving debut. The Hong Kong, China native was seventh overall with 705.75 points over two rounds of action. Zeng carried over 335.55 points from his preliminaries performance and topped the 60-point mark on five of his six dives in finals. His finals list included a reverse 2.5 somersault in the fifth round that received an award of 72.00 from the judges.

Junior Evan Moretti was 11th in the three-meter event, racking up 334.30 points in preliminaries and 361.55 in finals for a total of 695.85, while sophomore Nathaniel Hernandez placed 14th with a combined score of 666.05 – earning 319.40 in preliminaries and 346.65 in finals. Junior Josh Owsiany finished 30th in the event preliminaries (276.10).

All three Blue Devil women competing in Monday’s one-meter preliminaries advanced to the event finals. Junior Mackenzie Willborn led the trio with an 11th-place finish, recording a combined score of 541.80 for the day. Willborn totaled 274.30 points in the final, earning awards of 49.40 twice – on her first and sixth dives.

Senior MaryEllen Targonski was 14th overall with 532.05 points, scoring 277.60 in preliminaries and 254.45 in finals. Junior Lizzie Fitzpatrick came in 17th at 518.55 points after garnering 264.75 points during finals.

The NCAA Zone B Championships continue with men’s one-meter diving Tuesday at 11 a.m. The women’s three-meter competition will take place beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Knoxville. The top six men’s finishers and top seven women’s finishers in tomorrow’s events will secure NCAA qualification.
