COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – Graduate student Steven Solomon represented Duke in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 400m this evening at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M.

Competing in the fourth of four heats, Solomon opened the race with a time of 21.79 over the first 200m, putting him in second halfway through the race. The Sydney, Australia native followed with a split of 24.47 over the final 200m to take the lead and win his heat with a time of 46.26.

“Steven went out and won his heat at the NCAA meet and we’re very proud of him,” said director of track and field Norm Ogilvie “He’s clearly the best 400m runner ever at Duke and we’re looking forward to the outdoor season. There’s no shame in running a low 46 at the NCAA meet and it just shows what a high level of competition there is here.”

Solomon’s time of 46.26 put him in tenth place overall. With the top eight times advancing, Solomon misses out on Saturday’s final. He finishes the season as a second team All-American. It is the third All-American honor of his career, with the first two coming as a member of the Stanford track and field team. He is also both the Duke and ACC record holder in the 400m after running a time of 45.44 at the ACC Championships two weeks ago.

Duke will start Saturday’s competition with senior Madison Heath competing in the women’s pole vault. The Blue Devils will also have the quartet of Maddy Price, India Lowe, MacKenzie Kerr and Brittany Aveni competing in the women’s 4x400m relay. For Solomon, he will next travel to the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia to represent Team Australia at the Commonwealth Games. The games are scheduled to begin on April 4.

“Steven had a great indoor season,” Ogilvie added. “We wish him well at the Commonwealth Games and we’ll be excited to have him back racing for Duke in the outdoor season.”
