SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A balanced offensive attack combined with a solid showings from Katherine Huey and Peyton St. George in the circle paced the Duke Blue Devils (23-22, 8-10 ACC) to its first ACC road series win in program history Saturday afternoon against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (28-15, 11-6 ACC) in South Bend.}

The Blue Devils used a four-run third and tacked on two more in the fourth to create the distance they needed to win 6-2 and take the series from the Irish. Notre Dame would avoid the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the series finale.

Raine Wilson and Jazmine Moreno paced Duke offensively in a nine-hit game one as they each turned in a two-hit performance. Wilson and Haley Wymbs each recorded a pair of RBI, while Rachel Abboud and Kortney Dry drove in one run each. Huey (8-7) picked up the win, going 4.2 innings and allowing just one run, while St. George threw 2.1 innings in relief, striking out four and giving up a run.

Neither side made much noise in the first two frames before the Blue Devils opened the scoring in the third, getting things start with a double to left center from Moreno. After Dominique Salinas drew a walk, Wilson sent a double to left to push the first two runs of the game across. A sac bunt from Wymbs moved Wilson to third, setting up Abboud’s first RBI single of the day with a shot up the middle.

Up 3-0, Jameson Kavel singled up the middle to put two on with one out to chase Notre Dame’s pitcher and bring Dry to the plate. The second baseman sent one up the middle for Duke’s third-straight hit of the inning, scoring Abboud and pushing Duke’s lead to 4-0 through the first two and a half innings.

The Blue Devils tacked on two more runs in the fourth to push their lead to 6-0 via a double down the left field line from Wymbs, her first multi-RBI game of the season.

Notre Dame got one back in the fifth on an infield single with the bases loaded to cut Duke’s lead down to 6-1. The rally picked back up in the seventh, as the Irish led off with back-to-back singles before the Blue Devils retired the next two batters. With two outs, ND picked up one more run on a single into center to cut the lead to four, but a fly out to Salinas in center would close out the game, 6-2, and give Duke the series.

Game two featured a more back-and-forth contest in the early stages before Notre Dame pulled away late. Duke would strike first, going up 1-0 with an Abboud RBI double to center. The Irish responded with a three-run bottom of the first thanks to a Blue Devil error, a groundout RBI and a single to right field to make it 3-1 for the home team.

Duke evened the score in the next half, with Abboud leading the charge with her second run batted in for the game, as a single up the middle scored Wilson. On the next at bat, Kavel recorded an infield single to push Wymbs across home plate and tie things up at 4-4.

A triple to right center and a double to left center in consecutive at bats drove home two runs to put ND back in the lead, 5-3, after two.

Amelia Wiercioch got the Blue Devils back within one in the third, as she smoked a ball to right that a diving right fielder could not handle. The ball would roll into the corner in right, allowing Wiercioch to score the program’s first inside-the-park home run and cut it to 5-4.

However, Notre Dame would plate one in the bottom half of the third and two more in the fifth to push its lead to 8-4 heading to the sixth. With a runner on, back-to-back errors on the Irish would score Kavel and bring ND’s lead down to 8-5. A throwing error on the Blue Devils in the sixth would give that run back to Notre Dame, giving the Irish a 9-5 lead that it would hold for the remainder of the game.

Duke recorded 11 hits in game two, led by four multi-hit performances, as Wilson, Abboud, Kavel and Wiercioch each tallied two for the game. Abboud and Kavel were responsible for Duke’s three runs batted in, with Abboud tallying her third multi-RBI performance of the season.

Wiercioch (8-9) earned the start, going 1.2 innings and striking out one while only giving up one earned run. St. George made her second relief appearance of the day, going 4.1 innings and striking out five.

With their second series win of the conference season in hand, the Blue Devils will now return to North Carolina to face NC State in a midweek clash in Raleigh. The Wednesday, April 18 matchup is set for a 5 p.m. ET first pitch and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
