DURHAM, N.C. – An early goal coupled with a pair of late scores propelled the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils to a 3-0 victory Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium in their exhibition opener against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Duke wasted no time in getting things rolling, as freshman Mackenzie Pluck delivered a beautiful ball to Kayla McCoy, who slid it past the keeper for the game’s first score in the sixth minute. The Blue Devils would take that lead into the half despite a total of nine shots between the two sides in the first 45.

Georgia was able to keep it a one-goal contest until the Blue Devils struck again in the 71st minute. Tess Boade took a pass from Gabi Brummett and Marykate McGuire and sent the ball into the upper 90 from near the top of the 18’ to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team. Pluck added to her solid night on the pitch 17 minutes later, as Brummett sent a low cross into the box that the North Wales, Pa., native put in the back of the net to secure the match’s final score of 3-0.

Both sides finished with nine shots each on the night while Georgia held the advantage in corners, 3-2. Brooke Heinsohn earned the start in goal for the Blue Devils, recording four saves in the winning effort while both Holly Stam and Mackenzie Coles also saw action.

Church and his squad return to action Sunday night in their final exhibition matchup, hosting rival North Carolina at Koskinen. Kickoff is set for 10 p.m. ET.
