ORLANDO, Fla. – On a rainy Saturday night at the USTA National Campus, the Duke men’s tennis team was blanked, 4-0, by No. 17 Tennessee.
With rain in the forecast, the teams started outdoors with singles in an attempt to beat the showers. The rains arrived early and forced the contest indoors. With the match being played to clinch, no doubles took place as the Volunteers secured four singles victories.
Duke slips to 3-5 this season while Tennessee improves to 6-1.
The Volunteers took a 1-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-0 victory by Preston Touliatos on court five against senior Vincent Lin. Lin was even at 5-5 in the opening set before Touliatos ran off the final eight games of the match.
Tennessee made it a 2-0 advantage as Adam Walton downed junior Spencer Furman, 6-2, 6-3, on court two. Furman trailed just 3-2 in the first set before Walton ripped off the final three games of the set. The second set had Furman again trail 3-2, only to have Walton answer with three of the final four games.
Duke rallied in the second sets as all four remaining singles matches headed into decisive third sets.
On court four, the Volunteers picked up their third point as Martim Prata rallied past senior Catalin Mateas, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Mateas was even at 1-1 in the opening set before Prata took four of the next five games to control the set. The second set had Mateas jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Prata cut the deficit to 3-2, but Mateas answered with the final three games. With the third set even at 3-3, Prata held and broke to take a 5-3 advantage. Mateas broke back to trail just 5-4, but Prata broke for the win.
Tennessee clinched the match on court six, where Luca Wiedenmann downed junior Robert Levine, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-3. In the opening two sets, neither side led by more than a game with both going to the tiebreaker. The first tiebreaker had Wiedenmann turn a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 advantage before putting the set away. The second set tiebreaker was a reverse with Levine jumping ahead 2-0 and 3-1. Wiedenmann rallied to take a 4-3 lead, but Levine captured four of the final five points to force the deciding third set. Levine continued momentum to begin the third set, claiming a 2-0 advantage before Wiedenmann captured six of the final seven games to clinch the match.
Duke returns to action in one week, on Saturday, February 16, with a 1 p.m. home match against N.C. Central.
