DURHAM, N.C. – The third-ranked Duke women’s tennis team returns to Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Friday evening against Georgia Tech at 5 p.m., after opening the ACC season 2-0 on the road in Florida last weekend.
The Blue Devils (9-1, 2-0 ACC) are coming off a successful weekend on the road as they defeated No. 12 Florida State, 5-2, and No. 18 Miami, 4-3, while the Yellow Jackets (4-4, 1-0 ACC) picked up their first conference win last weekend against Pittsburgh.
The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 35-10 as they dropped the last two meetings with the Yellow Jackets. Most recently, Georgia Tech was victorious on its home courts last April by securing a 4-2 victory.
The Yellow Jackets are led by Kenya Jones, who is ranked No. 24 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll with a 4-2 ledger in dual matches on the top court. Jones and Jeanette Lin are tabbed No. 33 in doubles and own a 2-3 overall record in dual matches on court one.
The Blue Devils are facing their sixth-straight ranked opponent Friday as the Yellow Jackets check in at No. 35 in the latest poll. Duke’s previous five foes were all tabbed in the top 20 (No. 16 Ohio State, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 12 Florida State and No. 18 Miami).
Senior Kaitlyn McCarthy was named ACC Co-Player of the Week following her performance over the weekend at No. 18 Miami. McCarthy pushed the team to victory as she clinched the match on court four (4-6, 7-6 , 6-3).
The Blue Devils checked in at No. 3 in the most recent ITA team rankings and feature several on the singles and doubles list.
Chi is 6-1 this season while Mateas owns a ledger of 4-4. Chen (7-2), McCarthy (3-2) and Hamlin (8-1) round out Duke’s ranked singles players.
McCarthy and Hamlin earned the No. 18 spot on the dubs list followed by Margaryta Bilokin and Mateas at No. 56.
