He earned the award in 1954 after leading the Blue Devils to an 8-2-1 record, an ACC championship and a victory over Nebraska in the 1955 Orange Bowl.

The three-year starting quarterback threw for 603 yards and five touchdowns his senior year. That year he was also named a team captain and earned the team's Most Valuable Player award.

He was an NFL draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 1955 and played in the Senior Bowl concluding his collegiate career.
