Two-Time All-America, 1972, 1973
School Record-Holder in Three Events
Three-Time Atlantic Coast Conference Steeplechase Champion
Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Champion, 1972
A two-time All-America at Duke in 1972 and 1973 for head coach Al Buehler, Roger Beardmore still holds school track and field records in three events, including his trademark event: the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Beardmore ran side-by-side with Hall of Famer Bob Wheeler in the early 1970's, establishing one of the top running tandems in the country. The duo combined to win the prestigious Texas Relays their senior season and still hold two school relay records.
Actually disciplining himself for the steeplechase after learning that Wheeler signed a scholarship to run at Duke, Beardmore ran the mile and set the school record with a time of 4:09 before Wheeler arrived.
After concentrating on the steeplechase, Beardmore perfected his running style, winning three ACC titles, finishing fourth in the 1973 NCAA championships and earning All-America honors. He also won the 1972 ACC cross country title as a senior.
