Bob Chambers came to Duke in 1933, hired by Wallace Wade as athletic trainer and assistant track coach. He remained here for 32 years until his death from a heart attack in 1965.

Under Chambers' reign, the Blue Devil track team enjoyed some of its finest moments. As cross-country coach his first two years, he led the Blue Devils to one conference championship. Taking over the head track coaching duties in 1939, Chambers orchestrated three conference championships and guided the careers of three of Duke's most famed runners: Dave Sime, the owner of three world records and an Olympic Silver Medalist; Joel Shankle, an NCAA long jump champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist; and Cary Weisiger, an American record holder.

An Oklahoma native and Illinois graduate, Chambers was also widely respected for his work as Duke's head trainer. On staff under three football coaches, Chambers never missed a football game in 32 years, patching the Blue Devils together for an amazing 313 consecutive contests.

Chambers' longevity, in fact, spanned the careers of each of his fellow 1983 inductees.
