A native of Washington, D.C., Harry "Chalky" Councilor came South to Duke with high school teammate Bill Werber to form one of the great dynamic duos of early college basketball history. The twosome formed the nucleus of Duke's first great basketball team. Coached by Eddie Cameron, the 1930 State Championship squad brought national attention to the Methodist Flats as they breezed through the regular season with just one defeat. They finished the year 18-2, a mark that still stands second in the Duke record book for all-time win percentage. Councilor was the team's ring-leader, the floor general, a fiery competitor who delighted the crowds with his all-around floor game. His play earned him All-Southern and All-State first team selections; and although there were no All-America teams during his era, had there been there is no doubt that the name Harry Councilor would have been included.
