Farley, a 1930 Duke graduate, played athletics for the Blue Devils at the beginning of the Southern Conference era. He was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball, but enjoyed his greatest success on the diamond. The third baseman helped Duke to a Southern Conference championship his junior season and led the team in batting his senior year with a .486 average. The infield, comprised of Dayton Dean, Bill Werber and Farley, was known as "The Fastest Infield in Southern Baseball." He captained the basketball team his senior year and helped the Blue Devils to an 18-2 record, a State championship and a second place finish in the Southern Conference. The 18-2 record still stands as the second highest winning percentage ever compiled by a Duke basketball squad.
