K.C. "Gerry" Gerard ranks as one of the great coaches in Duke Basketball history. The Mishawaka, Ind., product guided the Blue Devils from 1943 through 1950 and led his teams to 131 victories, the fifth highest win total of any coach in Duke History. His teams won two Southern Conference tournaments and reached the final on four other occasions, while he earned league coach of the year honors twice in his last three seasons.

Gerard enjoyed numerous other successes during his 20 years at Duke. He arrived at the school in 1931 and built one of the nation's best intramural programs as director of intramurals. He organized Duke's first soccer team in 1935 and led the booters to a 40-23-9 record in 11 seasons as coach. He also was a noted football, basketball and track official, once serving as president of the Southern Conference Football Officials Association.

Gerard worked as an instructor in the physical education department throughout his Duke career, which ended in 1951 when he died of cancer at age 47.
