Dumpy Hagler, given his nickname by a Nashville sportswriter when he was an All-America football guard for Alabama, devoted 43 years of his life to Duke Athletics as assistant football coach and head golf coach. He began his coaching career as the freshman football mentor in 1930 and then took over the golf job in 1933. As golf coach, he produced 18 conference titles and had several nationally prominent squads. His 1947 team finished second in the NCAA, the 1948 team finished fourth, and the 1962 team finished third. As line coach under football legends Wallace Wade, Eddie Cameron and Bill Murray, he produced some of the best players Duke has ever known. His most famous unit was the 1938 front seven, who were nicknamed the "Iron Dukes." They went through the entire regular season without allowing a single score. Hagler is past president of the NCAA Golf Coaches Association, past chairman of the Southern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference Golf Committees, and a former member of the NCAA All-America selection committee. He retired from his football coaching position in 1957 and spent his final 14 years at Duke as manager of the Duke Golf Course in addition to coaching the golf team.
