Sonny Jurgensen will probably most be remembered for his numerous passing achievements during his 18-year professional football career, but there are many of us in Durham who remember him as a great all-around player at Duke University. In fact, the only Jurgensen record still on the Duke record books is for most consecutive games with at least one interception. In 1954, Jurgensen picked off one each in successive games against Tennessee, Purdue, Army and N.C. State. Jurgensen was the main cog in the 1954, 1955 and 1956 Duke teams which captured two league championships and performed in the 1955 Orange Bowl. Following his career at Duke, he went on to become a legend in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. When he retired in 1975, he departed as the league's all-time leading passer, having passed for over 18 miles of yardage and 255 touchdowns.
